Alec Baldwin will remain under police guard following his arrest for allegedly pulling a gun on crew members during the filming of an episode of the NBC crime drama 30 Rock, according to insiders close to the matter.
Baldwin, 58, was apprehended by US police early on Tuesday morning at Manhattan’s Studio City Courthouse after neighbours saw him arguing with an 18-year-old actor, James Del Biaggio, in the early hours.
The actor was taken to a Los Angeles jail and is awaiting an extradition hearing. He was charged with three counts of menacing, three counts of harassment and one count of criminal possession of a weapon in L.A. County.
Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officials told CNN there was “an intervention” with a 24-year-old gun.
“The actor produced a firearm inside the building and there was an intervention with the firearm by court security,” Sergeant Scott Steele told the news network.
Baldwin, who has been considered one of the United States’ leading liberal voices, played the role of Jack Donaghy, head of programming and a former NBC news correspondent, in the Emmy-winning 30 Rock, which ran from 2006 until 2012.
LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said the incident would be investigated by his detectives and that Baldwin would be released on bail on Tuesday evening.
News of Baldwin’s alleged gun-related arrest was reported by TMZ.com earlier on Tuesday.
TMZ said the actor was on scene when a rumoured wedding party entered the shooting location, located at a movie set on the sets of 30 Rock.
Before the actors left, the site said, Baldwin “walked off set and produced a gun”.
“We spoke to a member of the cast who says the gun went off and the actor took it from Baldwin’s hands,” TMZ said, adding that the actor then “threw the gun on the ground, ran to a car and was taken into custody”.
TMZ went on to allege that Baldwin had pulled out the firearm after being told not to by another actor in the shooting location.
Baldwin’s reported actions “obviously alarmed” the cast and crew working on the 30 Rock set and his actions “were not taken lightly”, a source close to the production told Newsweek magazine.
The star may not have the backing of his co-stars, though, as 30 Rock star Jane Krakowski tweeted: “Um… so apparently no one told @ABFalecbaldwin he’s not allowed to have a gun on set. C’mon. WHERE?…”
The actor’s post-30 Rock film career has not fared well either. Since 2012, Baldwin has starred in a number of forgettable movies and television shows.
Despite being charged on Monday with ‘interfering with a peace officer’, Baldwin’s latest project was unimpressive.
He shot a small part as a jazz musician in Terminal’s romantic comedy drama Tenderness – a film where he was set up as a “frustrated pop star that talks s*** about his own music” – on the first day of filming in 2012.
Following the cinema release, Baldwin was more actively involved in his directorial career, starting with How to Be a Latin Lover, which took just $262,000 (£182,000) in the US.
His upcoming films include Applebaum, in which he plays a lawyer whose ex-wife turns up in London, and Dave, in which he reprises his role as disgraced ex-New York Mayor Ed Koch.
Baldwin divorced American fashion designer Hilaria Thomas in 2014. The pair have a three-year-old daughter, Carmen.
